Abstract

Water is indispensable for human life, but the degradation of this resource has been occurring uncontrollably. Thus, the formulation of environmental public policies that provide a planning of the watersheds’ land use and cover at regional scales is indispensable. Only through regional governance will it be possible to integrate public policies that prioritize the economic development of a society and environmental protection. The present study evaluated the shortcomings associated with the Hydrographic Basins Plans and the Master Plans of the municipalities belonging to the Ribeirão do Feijão River Basin, based on a survey of land use and cover of 1998, 2008 and 2018. The expansion of the anthropic areas has been verified, causing a deterioration of natural areas and, consequently, ecosystem services. In this way, the creation of strategic environmental planning at the regional level will assist in the sustainable development of municipalities within the river basin.
