This paper aimed to propose an explanation of activities and the standardization of recycling terminologies, related to material plastic, specifically poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET. The method employed was based on exploratory research, by searching the terminologies used in recycling in scientific literature and Brazilian websites of organizations, on the words used for the recycling chain. In this study, new terms were proposed for the production units of a PET recycling chain to aid their correct characterization, such as recyclable material collector, distributor, distribution-recycler, intermediate-recycler, and molding-recycler. These terminologies are consistent with the Brazilian National Policy on Solid Waste. For validating the importance of standardization, the traditional and proposed terminologies were compared through field research on production units, which had already been working on PET recycling in Rio de Janeiro. The study concluded that a lack of standardization in the terminologies leads to different results on the recycling chain. As other result, Rio de Janeiro was found to have a small number of intermediate and molding recyclers.Downloads
