Abstract

The article analyzes how urban centers face the problem of organic solid waste from households, restaurants, street fairs, horticultural, supermarkets and others. The destination of this material for composting can directly increase the landfill’s life. Besides, the application of the compound in green roofs, vertical gardens, public squares, gardens and public and private raised can focus on improving the quality of urban space and of the landscaped appearance of neighborhoods, in reducing heat islands, and in increasing the thermal comfort in buildings. As a case study of two forms of accelerated composting of large-scale, one in São Paulo and another one in Vancouver, will be presented. The objective is to present the organic waste recovery alternatives, diverting this material from landfills through accelerated composting techniques, whose compost can be used in urban gardens, green roofs, and contain commercial value. Qualitative and quantitative analysis were considered for the development of the article and to achieve the established objectives, as follows: a) quantitative - through technical visits to Lapa composting plant in São Paulo, accelerated composting plant in Vancouver and urban gardens, for example, the Horta das Corujas; b) qualitative – it is considered analysis of standard techniques used for composting urban in order to identify which suit the characteristics of limited space of cities.
