Abstract

The consumption of fluoride present in surface water and groundwater is a common practice in many countries. Besides discussing the controversial theme of the fluoride consumption, this work presents a study case of risk assessment to human health by the consumption of fluoridated water from Mineral Waters Park, located in the south central region of Rio de Janeiro state. Fluoride concentrations were measured between October 2014 and August 2015 from three mineral water wells and their respectively recreational sources, popularly named of Alcalina Terrosa Cálcica, Alcalina Terrosa Ferruginosa e Alcalina Terrosa Magnesiana, in order to assess the risk of the development of fluorosis and bones fractures by the population that consumes that mineral water. This work considered the daily water consumption of five main groups: babies, infants, children, teenagers and adults. It was modeled that babies and infants groups are more exposed to chronic risks of fluorosis in Alcalina Terrosa Magnesiana source. It is recommended the mineral water of Alcalina Terrosa Magnesiana source does not be consumed by children’s group.
