Abstract

The Brazilian forest code of 2012 admits the inclusion of the legal reserve in the areas of permanent preservation and defines areas of consolidated use. Thus, this research evaluated the temporal evolution of land use and occupation in the areas of environmental protection, from 2008 to 2016, of the sub-basin of São Tomé River, in the south of Minas Gerais, before the new legal forest framework. From Landsat satellite images of 2008, 2013 and 2016 land uses, occupations and permanent preservation areas were mapped. From these maps, illegal uses and areas of consolidated use were identified. In 2016, 55.66% of the permanent preservation areas contained illegal use; however, considering the consolidated use, 97.74% of the sub- basin is adequate to the code, which points to a law that defends forest resources and environmental ecosystem services with less stringency.
