Abstract

Research studies accomplished in different countries have reported the growing fate of anti-inflammatory non-steroid drugs being discarded in natural waters, principally in big urban centers where the wastewater environmental management does not follow the economic development nor the growing of the population. This can create, consequently, environmental and health impacts due to the emission of harmful compound in the water bodies. Thus, this study assessed the presence of naproxen, paracetamol, diclofenac and ibuprofen in Veado/Limoeiro and Cedro Rivers in Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, Brazil, in rainy and dry seasons. Diclofenac and ibuprofen where the substances that showed the higher concentrations, 11 and 42 mg.L1, respectively, indicating sewage contamination. The higher levels of concentration occurred during the rainy season due to the geological formation of the region or to desorption mechanisms of pharmaceutics from river sediments.
